Foolproof Systems
Quadrant 3 of the Four Quadrants of Automation: high productivity bought by locking a process down so tightly that people can no longer think, adapt, or contribute inside it.
Foolproof Systems is the first of two automation traps in the Four Quadrants of Automation: a process engineered so rigidly that mistakes become impossible, and so does creativity. Consistency goes up. Contribution goes to zero. Teams stop being thinkers and become operators, following a script that was optimized for a moment in time that’s already passed.
It’s a subtler trap than Job Stripping because it doesn’t look like a layoff. The people are all still there. They’ve just been quietly turned into components of the system instead of participants in it.
